| Description: Long before the area around Cancun was a glimmer in resort developers' eyes, the Mexican destination known today as the Riviera Maya (map), the native Mayan people navigated its turquoise blue Caribbean waters. The area proved not only to be a beautiful place to live, but the coastal region and waterways were an integral part of their maritime system communication which extended from Mexico to Honduras. Because
of the draw of beauty, culture and adventure, Pelicanos Tours decided
to opened a branch on the mainland in Playa del Carmen, opening for
operations and reservations. It seems strange to link the coast and rivers of the Mayan World during pre-Hispanic times to a zone that is adorned today with hotels and modern facilities. But, without the history of the Mayan culture, much of this region wouldn't be as it is today. In the past 20 years the fast development of the Riviera Maya has added an ethnic makeup to the area, besides those indigenous in origin. |
